Detailed View on Design Study in India

Design academic fields in India have been doing really good since early years of 2000s. Before 2004 design studies was provided by a few government institutions. These institutes were mostly part of larger technical institutes. The only stand alone academic institute dedicated to design was the National Institute of Design in Ahmadabad.
Design education scenario in India
Since 2004 the Design and arts academic sector has enlisted a few private sector academic institutes and the number of private colleges has grown immensely. That is what brought the design studies field a huge growth. There are 70 academic institutes today, who are teaching design studies on various scales. Both the number of courses to choose from and candidates interested in pursuing them has grown exponentially. For enrollment in design studies NID organizes National Entrance Examination. The number of students appearing for this entrance exam is also growing year after year. Indian design academic systems provide students with different kind of programmers like diploma, under-graduate and postgraduate for covering all the aspects of designing. In recent times mane institutions has started providing students with “Applied Arts” program, which comes under graphic design.
To have a total idea about the Design academic picture it is also need to be known that in India the study system of the mentioned field have low amount of opportunities to move forward into master’s from bachelor’s level, as well as the moving to Ph.D. from Master’s is also not smooth. Actually the syllabus that is learned in the postgraduate and undergraduate classes is mostly similar. The reason for these is the eligibility criteria for postgraduate programmers are any kind of graduation, not design graduates only. As for the Ph.D. in Design study India provides very little option of programs for Ph.D. in design.

Manipal academy of Higher Education provides Ph.D. through the Sristhi School of Design, which is a research centre of Manipal Academy of Higher Education. Interested candidates can also get enrolled for online courses, 40 percent of total institutes of India provide online courses of design studies.
Career scope
In recent times the design industry has witnessed a boom in the field of job openings. One third of the students who completes courses on designing become entrepreneurs, a part of them joins different aspects of business in the designing field like, freelance designer or independent design consultant. Most of the graduate students go in the media industry or pursue master’s courses. There are huge amount of job opportunity in these fields, like transportation, entertainment, retail, consumer goods, telecommunication, manufacturing and publishing.
